're right. i'm about 20 miles outside of washington, d.c. right now. virginia, a democratic state in 2008. president obama took it back, however, in 2009, t.j., we saw republicans take back the governorship. republicans are hoping to pick up a couple seats in this state in their quest for at least 39 seats. the number, t.j., that they need to take back the house of representatives. you're right i got to spend about a half hour with republican national committee chairman michael steele, t.j., as we grove out here, very interesting things to say to me. >> we have watched as this government has ignored the people. and has acted in a way in which they have dismissed, they have name called, and they have just put out of their minds what's important. what's important to america. well, guess what? we take the country back by firing pelosi. we take the country back by retiring harry reid. >> reporter: there you go. there's michael steele in washington, d.c. right before he left to head into virginia, t.j. let me tell you, a couple things he had to say to me on the way out here to fairfax, 20 mime

bash is in sterling, virginia. dana, are we talking about contract with america 2.0 here? >> reporter: in many ways, yes, kyra, the whole theme as you said among house republicans is to try to convince voters just six weeks before the election that they do have some plans to actually run the government. however, just look at where i am and the images of people remembering in 1994, how different it is. the last thing in the world that republicans wanted to do would be to stand on the steps of the capitol as they did back then representing everything that some of the people that they're really trying to get can't stand. that's why we are here at a small business. that's the emphasis today. the whole question of whether or not anything is different in here, we see a lot of what we have heard. the fact that they want to trim spending, the fact to make tax cuts permanent, the fact to repeal the president's health care plan and there are some small pieces in here that i think are interesting and i should show our viewers and clearly bones, if you will, to tea party voters trying to placate.

. with the president's panes in virginia on monday in a suburban backyard for an hour and a half he took questions from the residents of this neighborhood. not once in those 90 minutes was the war with afghanistan, was iraq, was the military ever mentioned either by the president or any of about 20 people who asked him questions. how do each of you view this apparent lack of interest or weariness with what's happening there? >> i think for a lack of interest or weariness for all the people who didn't speak about it or think about it, i think there's millions more americans that really do understand what the american soldier is going through, and i'm not doing it right now. i'm still a soldier, but at the same time, i'm proud. i'm so proud to say i'm with the 173rd. i am stoked that i can say, i'm with the rock. battle hard. i'm proud right now of being on the attachment team, serving and they're out in doing it again. and if other people don't know, well, hopefully they'll listen to this and they'll remember that there's men and women out there every single day giving everything for their country. >> y
